Electrical and computer engineering associate professor Dario Pompili’s team of graduate student researchers won the Best Paper Award at the 2017 IEEE/IFIP Wireless On-demand Network Systems and Services Conference (WONS) in February.
Their paper, entitled “Collaborative Multi-bitrate Video Caching and Processing in Mobile-Edge Computing Networks,” was coauthored by ECE graduate students Tuyen Tran, Parul Pandey, and Abolfazl Hajisami, alongside Pompili.

Vishal M. Patel, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers University, was awarded a Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Science and Technology for his research related to the development of robust and efficient methods for learning structured representations of multimodal data. He will develop methods for multimodal metric learning and multimodal data fusion based on sparse and low-rank representations.

Emina Soljanin, professor of electrical and computer engineer, has been elected to serve as an officer of the IEEE Information Theory Society. She began her term at the start of 2017 assuming the role of second vice president. She is expected to ascend to the presidency of the society in 2019.

Information Theory encompasses the processing, transmission, storage, and use of information, and the foundations of the communication process, and the IEEE Information Theory Society is the pre-eminent community developing the mathematical underpinnings of information technology for the benefit of humanity.

Professor Grigore Burdea has been named the recipient of the 2017 IEEE Virtual Reality Career Award given by the Visualization and Graphic Technical Committee of the IEEE. This award established in 2005, is given every year to an individual to honor that person’s lifetime contribution to virtual and/or augmented reality and is the highest award in this field. Professor Burdea is noted for his invention of the Rutgers Master, the first force feedback glove as well as Virtual Reality Therapy to improve symptoms related to chronic pain, dementia, and chronic stroke.

The Novice2Expert Coding Club organized two MIT App Inventor workshops for middle school students this year on January 14th and 15th. The goal of the 3 hour workshops was to familiarize students with basic programming concepts while they learned how to make cool mobile apps. The workshops took place in ECE Computer Lab and was led by Parneet Kaur (Graduate Student) and Umama Ahmed(sophomore).

The Capstone Kickoff was held in the Busch Student Center. Attending were 120 capstone students, 17 industry representatives, ECE faculty and staff.
Speakers included Dr. Hana Godrich, Dr. Narayan Mandayam (ECE Dept Chair), Dr. Yicheng Lu and Don Bachman from ASCO Power Technologies.
