Athina Petropulu, Distinguished Professor of ECE, was elected President-Elect for the IEEE Signal Processing Society for the term 1 January 2020 through 31 December 2021. This is the first time that the IEEE Signal Processing Society President-Elect was elected directly by the membership.

A team of ECE faculty members led by Professor Marco Gruteser (PI) has received a new NSF award for the project titled "Reality-Aware Networks." This is a collaborative research project with Georgia State University and Old Dominion University. This project includes ECE Professors Narayan Mandayam and Kristin Dana as co-PIs at Rutgers as well as ECE alumni Ashwin Ashok and Shubham Jain, who are faculty members at the partner universities. The total award amount for this four-year project is $1.2M.

Yicheng Lu received the 2019 School of Engineering (SoE) Faculty of the Year Award.  This award recognizes exceptional contributions of a SoE faculty member to the School of Engineering, the University, the engineering profession, the scientific community and/or society at large.

National Science Foundation funding supports Rutgers professor’s collaboration to understand dark matter Coupling technological advances in data science and artificial intelligence/machine learning with established scientific theories is the basis for a study in the detection of dark matter by Rutgers School of Engineering professor Waheed Bajwa and other university colleagues.

A team of ECE faculty members led by Associate Professor Dario Pompili (PI) has received a new NSF award for the project titled "Real-Time Autonomic Decision Making on Sparsity-Aware Accelerated Hardware via Online Machine Learning and Approximation.” This three-year $1.4M project includes Associate Professor Saman Zonouz and Assistant Professor Bo Yuan as co-PIs.

Professor Wade Trappe, the new ECE Undergraduate Director welcomed incoming ECE undergraduate students on Wednesday September 5th. Professor Trappe was appointed the new Undergraduate Director at the beginning of July. Wade has been an outstanding contributor to the department's mission as the Chair of the ECE ABET committee that resulted in our most successful evaluation ever, as well as in his leadership role at WINLAB. He has also served in the past as the Graduate Program Director of ECE.

Yingying Chen will serve as the inaugural Associate Undergraduate Director of the ECE department. Yingying has been an outstanding contributor to the department's mission through her world class research program, student mentoring and leadership roles at WINLAB. The ECE Department is grateful that she has taken on this newly created role in ECE and work with Undergraduate Director Wade Trappe, to meet the various challenges of our increasingly successful undergraduate program. Please join us in welcoming Yingying as the Associate Undergraduate Director.

ECE Associate Professor Waheed Bajwa is the recipient of a new NSF award for the project entitled “Distributed Machine Learning in the Age of Fast Data Streams.” This is a three-year $450,000 project.

ECE Assistant Professor Sheng Wei is the recipient of a new NSF award for the project "Content-Based Viewport Prediction Framework for Live Virtual Reality Streaming." This is a three-year $496,085 collaborative award led by Rutgers with Northeastern University and Texas State University. Rutgers' share of this award is $214,874.
